Artrite reumatoide - Rheumatoid Arthritis

Some weeks ago a friend shared a video on Facebook that really caught my attention. Ilaria Milani talks about the disease she suffers from, that is rheumatoid arthritis, and she does that in a very straightforward way. You don't hear much about RA, I personally didn't really know what it was till I had to work on the translation of a couple of articles on the matter. Ilaria's disease is my disease also. I was diagnosed back in July, when it showed itself in the most evident way. After years of consults, of waiting, of hiatuses and wrong diagnoses, my life has changed and will keep changing. Aside from drugs, injections, x-rays and exams, made on a more than hoped for regular basis, I can say that I've finally learnt a new lesson. After years of pain, troubles and anxiety given by the awareness that one day, well, I felt comfortable, but the day after, maybe, I wouldn't have been able to even woke up, I've finally understood. I've understood that every single day, and every single moment, and even every single second is a blessing. I went through days when waking up from my bed was too hard for words, holding my children in my arms gave me tears and I was constantly scared I might let them fall because my hand hurt too much. Today I am on my feet again, a couple of months ago I could not. I can play with my kids and take them out to the playground, at the beginning of the summer I was completely stuck. Therapy keeps pain and the disease under control at the moment. It will come a day when pain wins, when my hands hurt too much for holding my needle, when it will take courage to stroke my children's cheek, when my legs will give out and I'll no longer be able to run. I'll thank the Lord every day for having run into a capable doctor and giving me the chance to understand that everything is a gift and shall not be taken for granted, not even the littlest step and the most subtle movement. The Lord gave me this hands of mine and lots of interests: I'll make use of my talents, as long as I'm able to, with a strong rod to hold onto and two smiling angels ready to take my hand, this I promise.
